What inspired you to record a holiday song?

I’ve always loved Joni Mitchell’s song River, so when Dave Chick and I decided to work together and record a cover song, we both agreed this was a wonderful opportunity to sit in this beautiful piece and bring our own creativity to it.

What is your fondest holiday memory as a kid?

Oh goodness! The first thing that jumps to mind is the year I got Wonder Woman underoos! We also had just got a polaroid camera and I took my first photograph. It was of our Christmas tree. So there is a very proud polaroid of me holding my polaroid of the Christmas tree in my Wonder Woman underoos…

Do you still get excited about seeing gifts under the tree? What was your most favorite surprise?

As a Mom, I love the look in my Children’s eyes when they see the gifts under the tree, but there is so much else about the holiday season that brings me excitement and joy. Now that I have children, the importance and moments of our own building traditions are pretty wonderful.

I’m often the person in charge of all the surprises so no come to mind at the moment! But I do love being on this end of things too! In fact we have a pretty fun surprise planned this year, but I can’t say anything until Dec 26!

Do you have any special holiday family traditions you would like to share?

Every year the family decorates homemade sugar and gingerbread cookies, and sings carols around the fire. We go ice skating as well, and for the last several years my husband and I have hosted Christmas Eve Dinner for his whole family.

What is your favorite Christmas/holiday song (that isn’t yours)?

River by Joni Mitchell.

What inspired you to write a Christmas/holiday song?

Perhaps one day I shall.

Do you have any holiday recipes you would like to share?

I love to make the Banana Pudding you can get at Magnolia’s in NYC. I do it with lactose free ingredients though for easier digestion. I found the recipe online in a few places, but here is 1 version of it.

What are your fondest musical memories associated with the holiday season?

Singing carols with the family.

In your opinion, what is the all-time best holiday song?

Carol Of The Bells is simply beautiful! But I also love a simply sung version of the first verse of Silent Night.

Do you believe in Santa?

100%! The magic of Santa is all around us.

What message do you want people to hear when they listen to your song?

I actually am hoping it helps create a moment to just sit still and feel. As well as a very jolly time of year, it can also be a very lonely and sad time of year. If this song gives people a moment to pause and just feel their sadness, perhaps they’ll know they’re not so alone after all.

What do you enjoy more? Receiving gifts or giving them?

What charities do you support?

There are a few we support throughout the year. One of the main ones I give to is here in Vancouver called The Beauty Night Society. So often women on the street or who are stuck in abusive relationships, or poverty, rarely are they touched physically with self care or kindness. Beauty Night gives make overs and runs wellness and life skills development classes 4 nights a week in two locations. In 15 years they’ve given over 60,000 make overs to women in need.

Here is a link to an interview I did with the creator 6 years ago, as well as a link to their site if you’d like to donate or volunteer.

What are your top 5 favorite holiday songs?

Silver Bells
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas
Bob & Doug’s 12 Days of Christmas

Have you ever gotten a lump of coal in your stocking?

Not yet!

Have you been naughty or nice this year?

A perfect balance of both I hope!
